Before moving off from the kerb, you should:

1. Rely only on the rear-view mirror
2. Check mirrors and blind spots, signal if needed, and move only when safe
3. Signal for several seconds, then move out on the assumption that traffic will yield
4. Move out slowly without signalling, since slow speed makes your intention obvious
