Practice question

If the way is not clear when approaching a red light with a green arrow, what should you do?

  1. Proceed cautiously through the intersection.
  2. Stop and obey the red light rules.
  3. Continue straight and ignore the arrow.
  4. Yield to pedestrians and then proceed only when safe.

Answer: B — Stop and obey the red light rules.

Stop when you see a red signal. A green arrow allows a turn only if you can do so safely and with a clear path. If the way isn’t clear, you must wait and not enter the intersection. You may proceed only when the signal changes to permit the turn and the path is clear, yielding to pedestrians and other vehicles as required. Moving through the intersection or ignoring the arrow while the red signal is active would be unsafe and illegal.
