Practice question

What is the FIFTH step to starting the engine?

  1. Press the starter button. Avoid using the throttle.
  2. Turn the fuel valve OFF.
  3. Turn the engine cut-off switch to ON.
  4. Shift to neutral.

Answer: A — Press the starter button. Avoid using the throttle.

Starting a motorcycle is about letting the starter motor crank the engine cleanly, then letting it idle once it fires. After you’ve set the kill switch to run, turned the key on, and opened the fuel valve, and you’ve ensured the bike is in neutral (or you’ve pulled in the clutch to disengage the transmission), the next action is to press the starter button. This uses the electrical starter to crank the engine without needing any extra fuel or air beyond what’s already in the system. Keeping the throttle closed during this moment is important because giving it gas can flood the engine or cause an unwanted, abrupt surge once it starts. Once it fires, you can gradually introduce a little throttle as needed.
