Practice question

Which sign shows a staggered junction?

  1. Junction on bend ahead
  2. Double bend first to left (symbol may be reversed)
  3. Staggered junction
  4. Bend to the right (or left if symbol reversed)

Answer: C — Staggered junction

A staggered junction is when two junctions along the main road don’t line up opposite each other. The sign for this hazard shows the main road with a minor road entering from one side and then again further on from the other side, offset from the first entry. This warns you that vehicles may emerge from the minor road at either point, so you should slow down and be prepared to give way or react to turning traffic. The other signs indicate different features—one shows a junction on a bend, another shows two bends, and another shows a bend in the road—so they describe different hazards and aren’t about offset junctions.
