Practice question

On a two-lane road, when is passing allowed?

  1. Only when approaching a curve with no oncoming traffic.
  2. Never allow passing on two-lane roads.
  3. If you are in a hurry, you may pass.
  4. Only when the line is dashed and it is safe and legal to pass.

Answer: D — Only when the line is dashed and it is safe and legal to pass.

Passing on a two-lane road is governed by the centerline markings and visibility. A dashed centerline means you may pass if it is safe and legal to do so—you must have enough clear distance to complete the maneuver without cutting into the opposing lane, and you must return to your lane before the dashed line ends or before you encounter a solid line or restricted area. If the centerline is solid, or if visibility is poor due to curves, hills, intersections, or other hazards, passing is not allowed. Being in a hurry doesn’t make it legal. So the best rule is: pass only when the line is dashed and it is safe and legal to pass.
